Central Jersey Medical Center’s Guide to Children’s Dental Health

Central Jersey Medical Center (CJMC) believes that dental health is not just about clean teeth but rather the connection to overall health, self-confidence, speech development, and nutrition. Forming a good basis for oral care at an early age can prevent pain and potential dental problems later in life. With the right oral health routines, most dental issues can be prevented.

About Children’s Dental Health

One of the most common dental conditions in children is tooth decay which is also one of the most preventable. Cavities in children’s teeth can cause:

• Pain and infection

• Difficulty eating and speaking

• Trouble concentrating in school

• Sleep disruption

• Long-term dental complications

Keeping children’s teeth healthy can help them to properly chew their food. It can also help to develop clear speech, and helps them gain self-confidence with their healthy smiles.

When To Begin Dental Care with Your Child

CJMC says that dental care should start earlier than you may think.

Children Up To Age 1:

• You should clean a baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings to remove film from formula, milk, or food.

• After the first tooth appears, use a soft toothbrush to gently clean the tooth and mouth.

• Make sure to schedule their first dental visit at any of the CJMC’s dental locations by their first birthday to allow our dentists to check for any issues and to get them comfortable with dental visits.

CJMC’s Tips to Keep Your Child’s Teeth Healthy

• Brushing their teeth twice a day for at least two minutes is recommended with the appropriate amount of toothpaste for your child. CJMC’s dentists will advise what is appropriate based on your child’s age.

CJMC suggests limiting the amount of cavity causing food such as:

• Gummy candy and fruit that stick to the teeth

• Too many sugary drinks and sweetened fruit juices

Dental Visits at CJMC

CJMC has several locations for dental care visits including Perth Amboy, Carteret, and Newark (Central High School). Children should see a CJMC dentist every six months for preventive care that may include:

• Professional cleanings

• Fluoride treatments

• Dental sealants (protective coatings placed on molars that can reduce cavities in the back teeth)

• Early orthodontic screening that may require a referral

Your feet contain approximately 25% of all the bones in your body, along with dozens of joints, muscles, and ligaments. They support your weight, keep you balanced, and absorb shock with every step. Neglecting your feet can lead to pain, infections, mobility issues, and more serious complications especially for people with chronic conditions like Diabetes. The Central Jersey Medical Center Encourages You to Follow Simple Daily Footcare Tips Wash and Dry Thoroughly Always wash your feet with soap and water, and make sure to dry between the toes to prevent fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Trim Toenails the Correct Way Cut nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. Don’t cut them too short, and avoid digging into the corners. Central Jersey Medical Center’s Podiatry Services can help with that. Choose the Right Shoes Look for shoes that provide arch support, cushioning, and enough room to wiggle your toes. Socks Matter Too Wear clean, breathable socks preferably made from cotton or moisture-wicking materials. If your feet sweat a lot, consider changing socks during the day. Footcare for Special Situations For Athletes: Pay attention to proper footwear and hygiene to avoid blisters and fungal infections. For People with Diabetes: Daily inspection is crucial. Even small injuries can turn into serious complications without proper care. For Seniors: Regular foot exams with Central Jersey Medical Center’s Podiatry Services, and wearing comfortable, supportive shoes that can prevent falls and promote mobility. Don’t Wait for Pain to Start. Feet often go unnoticed until they hurt. But by then, damage may already be done. Regular footcare is an act of proactive wellness. Inspect Your Feet Regularly. Look for any cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or changes in skin or nail color. If you notice anything unusual that doesn’t go away, contact the Central Jersey Medical Center for a Podiatry Services appointment.
